Things we can't wait to tell you about...

An important change to Otixo

In planning how to create an even brighter Otixo future, we’ve had to make a serious business decision:

Otixo will no longer offer a free account.

This new direction will help us support you even better – bringing our users new features, more clouds and more personalized support.

Today, all free accounts will start a 14-day free trial period, after which, we sincerely hope users will continue to support us by purchasing a monthly or yearly subscription for unlimited use of Otixo.

Here’s more information about the subscription plans:

As part of these changes, we’ve also decided to make our mobile app, Photixo, free. Get it today at the iTunes App Store or the Google Play Store!

Please join us on this journey to help Otixo redefine how we live, work and play in the clouds.

  • MARWOFAFebruary 7th, 2013 at 1:04 am

what the hell is that? fucking money!! none will be your customers!

  • HourBFebruary 7th, 2013 at 1:22 am

That’s stupid move. Your services are not yet stable to switch to paid plans. Moving files between clouds is very slow and buggy. You should instead reduce it monthly limit instead of removing it all. With this you opted for suicide loosing all opportunities and future customers. Btw you cheated us by getting all referrals and ditching us in the end. I am going to remove my article from my blog. I feel guilty for referring people to Otixo.

that business model does not work in the space you have made your business.

you are throwing away the 3 years of users who brought you to this point.

good bye otixo – no way you are worth $50 a year to me

and not a good omen for the future if you can’t support free accounts

such a shame b/c you have a great service

  • undomielleFebruary 7th, 2013 at 5:06 pm

    Are. you. serious.
A paid service to do what? Simply manage cloud storage that has been acquired either as ALREADY PAID FOR, or for FREE? And on top of that, a service that does not even support (not yet anyway) all of my individual cloud services?

I am sorry, but this simply makes not sense. It could potentially make some sense and your service might become somewhat marketable, if you had decided to stop offering free options for accounts that would be created AFTER you had made this decision, hence to customers that would know about this prior to their registration and hence, if you had decided to keep already registered accounts as free.

On the contrary, I now find out that I am registered for a trial account to a service that, on the trial-leading-to-paid basis, could not possibly tempt me to try.

However, as I am tricked into using a trial account anyway, I will probably check it out within the next couple days as opposed to later (which was the original idea, as from a first look the service doesn’t look THAT useful), but after that, I am afraid it is BYE BYE time.

  • pedro geraldesFebruary 7th, 2013 at 7:18 pm

pretty bad, you could set a limited account(free) with limited cloud accounts, and then if passing that amount of accounts you could charge, sorry im not buying that.

  • CarlFebruary 7th, 2013 at 9:36 pm

One of the selling points of your service that let you stand out from the rest was the fact that it incurred no recurring fees; it was free, and while I’m sure this decision was one you thought long and well over, I do not think it was right.

Don’t get me wrong. You have the right idea, but what you should have done was offer a limited free account and charge past a certain point. This way, people who have not yet been privy to what you had to offer in the past can still wet their pallet without commitment.

As for me, I’m sorry, but from a logical standpoint I don’t see the need to pay for a service to access my otherwise free storage.

    Hi Damien,
We haven’t been beta testing in over a year. We really hoped to keep a Free account. We made the decision to switch because we weren’t growing our small business fast enough to sustain a five-person company. It was a really hard decision to make and we know it’s taking a big chance. We pray it pays off in the long run.

  • mollyFebruary 7th, 2013 at 10:13 pm

    Hi,
We’ve just hit our one year mark since leaving beta, which we were in for 6 or so months. We hope to refocus the model, and we’re so sorry to have disappointed you.

  • KarenFebruary 8th, 2013 at 6:03 am

I agree, this is not right Otixo should not take away the free accounts from those who participated in the beta testing. You can stop offering more free accounts now, but all beta testers should retain their accounts with no reduction in services.

That’s the trade. That’s what we signed on for. The standard model for going pay is that you offer faster and more to paying customers, but you still reward those who help you test the product by letting them keep what they signed on for. You will generate more bad publicity from this than you think.

    *sigh*

    moncler mantel…

    nice post,thanks for share….

  • GuidoZFebruary 8th, 2013 at 8:43 am

Such a shame indeed. I just recommended the service to someone today, but he texted saying he thought it was free. Low and behold… just bad timing. I get the need to make money in a business and I won’t claim to know yours. I do feel this was more than just “taking a big chance”. The service doesn’t seem popular enough to drop ALL existing accounts, and then expect newcomers to pay $50/yr. I’m sure it’s worth it if someone needed the service – but they don’t know they need it yet! A free trial won’t entice many, but removing limitations from a free account will. Unfortunately I’ll have to look elsewhere, which is unfortunate, because this was a very promising service. Best of luck to you either way!

Are you TRYING to lose customers? I just got an e-mail from you with a subject line of 2/14. Um no, remove me immediately from your spam messages.

Ever since CX.com began to aggressively discourage free accounts with a ludicrously onerous requirement to login every 2 weeks or lose your data (or pay them ransom to recover your data), I was dubious of Otixo since they were primary boosters of CX.com as a free cloud storage provider. Otixo continued to endorse and promote CX even after CX made their ugly changes. (You can barely find CX.com’s original mission of free storage to individuals on their webpage.)

The web interfaces for the major cloud service providers has improved dramatically. Transfer speeds are fast — faster than WebDav and much faster than Otixo. Their webpages increasingly look and feel like a local file explorer. And free apps from the biggies make files in the cloud appear as local.

With Microsoft, Google, Apple, Amazon, and others offering free huge capacity storage, there is no need to hire a little guy, especially one whose business model is Bait ‘N Switch.

For the above reasons, CX and Otixo will likely fail. I would feel badly about this, but the Bait ‘N Switch business models of these companies make me a little less weepy.

Very disappointed. I will not be continuing with otixo.

  • tangopeterFebruary 19th, 2013 at 8:29 pm

Oh oh Otixo… WHAT have you done? In the corner with you, and be ashamed.

Such a good start, and such un unhappy ending.

    Rest In Peace.

I just subscribed – LOVE your service! For all the time, energy, and disorganization Otixo saves me, it is WELL worth the small charge. Keep doing what you’re doing, Otixo! Genius! WAY better than Primadesk, in my opinion!

Would love to see integration with SpiderOak in the future, but it’s not a dealbreaker! :)

Thanks Otixo! You’ve made my week SO much easier now that I don’t have to remember which cloud service I stored something on!
